Breakfast onboard the river boat. This morning, join us for a tour of Berlin, once the iconic representation of a world divided in two. Berlin, founded in 1237, is still a young city compared to other European cities, but its story is unusual. The German capital was born from the merger in 1307 of two cities: Berlin and Cölln. Berlin became the royal residence city following the ascension of Frederick III, crowned by the name of Frederick I in 1701. But it was under the reign of Frederick II, that architectural reorganization of the city begins, classical buildings designed by the architects Schinkel and Knobelsdorf gives a new face to the city. The National Socialist dictatorship and the Second World War will reduce the city to ruins. August 13, 1961 begins the construction of the Berlin Wall until it was destroyed on 9 November 1989 which will separate the city and its people. Since Berlin once again became the capital of Germany, it has continued to change, and evolve. Departure by bus from Berlin-Spandau to discover the German capital in the company of a local guide, who will show you 3 hours of history, monuments, and the many facets of this historic city. You will go up the avenue of June 17 that will take you all on board the famous victory column next to which is a statue of Bismarck, and at the door of the Reichstag and Brandenburg adjoining the glass dome. You will reach the famous avenue under the lime trees (Unter den Linden) and you will reach the Museum Island bringing together the five most prestigious museums of Berlin, the Pergamon Museum and the Altes Museum which hosts the bust of Nefertiti. Behind the Museum Island and its classic buildings, is the modern Alexanderplatz and its famous television tower. You will be lead past the site of Gendarmes, to Check Point Charlie, the former crossing point between the Russian and American zones of Berlin. This is only a preview but you will still discover many other monuments that make Berlin one of the most cultural cities in Europe. The afternoon will be dedicated to a visit of the gardens at the Sanssouci Palace, the former residence of Frederick the Great. Tonight, will be our gala dinner and evening. Don’t be misled into thinking that Warsaw has nothing to offer to the culturally inclined visitor. Sightseeing tour of Warsaw will include the Castle Square where you can see the first non-ecclesiastic statue in Warsaw King Sigismund’s Column and the original Gothic castle which dates back to the 15th century and expanded throughout the centuries is the seat of the kings of Poland. Afterwards, you will pass the late-Gothic structure by John Baptist of Venice – the Barbican. DAY 14 – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 WARSAW, POLAND
Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the Wilanow Palace and Park Wilanow which is surrounded by the most interesting Baroque structures in Warsaw. It was originally the home of the Leszczynskich family whose most illustrious members include Stanislaw Leszczynski who was twice elected the King of Poland and his daughter Maria who married Louis 14th, King of France. In 1677 Polish King Jan III Sobieski became the owner of the Wilanow estate. He renovated the palace several times and finally turned it into the Baroque structure. Today the palace houses the museum with many valuable collections of paintings and sculptures. Among them is the collection of precious Polish coffin portraits. The palace is surrounded with a beautiful park. Its major fragment was built at the same time as the palace and together they form an integral design. Each part of the park which was constantly expanded was designed in the style of the Italian, French, and English gardens. Back to the hotel after the tour.
