A 16 Day First Class Land Tour Of Finland And Norway
Including a 6 Day Classic Arctic Circle Norwegian Coastal Cruise.

In the summer Finnish Lapland bathes in 24-hour sunlight for nearly 3 months.  Lapland is Finland’s northernmost region, capital Rovaniemi is the gateway to the region, homeland of the indigenous Sami people.  The Norwegian coast is one of the most exciting and varied adventure destinations in the world, with its stirring and varied landscapes.  A voyage with Hurtigruten lets you explore highlights of this epic coast, and take you close to the culture and the everyday life of people living here.  Have breakfast at the North Cape, challenge yourself on a mountain hike in Hammerfest or Lofoten, explore the wilderness on a snowmobile or on a dog sledge, enjoy a hi-octane RIB adventure or discover cultural highlights.  North to south – a beautiful adventure.  The northern shores of Norway offer spectacular scenery, including Finnmark’s wide plains, the North Cape and the Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands.  As you cross the Polar Circle, the climate and landscapes become milder, but none the less impressive.  On this southbound trip, we stop in Harstad, Lofoten and Trollfjorden during daytime.  From there, we sail south along the Helgeland coast, passing the Seven Sisters mountains.  You will continue to be impressed, when we sail through the overwhelmingly beautiful, unspoilt west coast landscapes.  Authentic Norway.   Visiting 34 ports along the route is a great way to experience genuine Norway. See small settlements with less than 200 inhabitants and the big cities teeming with life. As you reach Bergen, the last port of call, you have completed a journey that has taken place along the Norwegian coast every day for the last 120 years.  How’s that for authentic?

DAY 2 – SATURDAY, MAY 26, 2018                                           ARRIVE HELSINKI, FINLAND
Upon arrival in Helsinki today, met and transfer to your hotel.  Helsinki’s historic center dates from the early 19th century, when Russia ruled Finland and designated this city as the country’s new capital.  As a result, the city has both a Russian look and a more modern layout than other European capitals. Graced with many buildings by noted Finnish architects such as Alvar Aalto, Helsinki today is a masterpiece of urban design.  Welcome dinner will be at our hotel.  Accommodation:  SCANDIC GRAND MARINA HOTEL or similar (2 nights).  (D)

DAY 3 – SUNDAY, MAY 27, 2018                                                HELSINKI, FINLAND
Breakfast at the hotel.  During the morning city tour of the Finnish capital you will admire the major sights such as the Rock Church, the Senate Square surrounded by the Lutheran Cathedral of Helsinki, the Senate, the University and Library of Helsinki, the Sibelius monument, the Olympic stadium, and the new Opera House.  Lunch at local restaurant. The afternoon is yours to explore the city on your own.   (B/L)

DAY 4 – MONDAY, MAY 28, 2018                                              HELSINKI – IVALO, FINLAND
Today fly to Rovaniemi.  Then transfer by coach (approx. 4 hours) to your hotel in Ivalo in northern Finland.  Ivalo is a gateway to Lapland, the home of the Sami, the indigenous people who have lived in northern Scandinavia since prehistoric times. Lapland, also called Samiland, spans northern parts of Finland, Norway, and Sweden.  Although the Sami are a minority of today’s population in northern Finland, their cultural traditions endure.  Dinner will be at the hotel.  Accommodation: IVALO HOTEL or similar (2 nights).   (B/D)

DAY 5 – TUESDAY, MAY 29, 2018                                              IVALO, FINLAND
Breakfast at the hotel.  This morning drive to Siida Sami Museum, located in the heart of the village of Inari.  The museum focuses on Sami and northern Lapland culture and nature.  Touring continue to a reindeer farm where you will experience reindeer feeding and have time to take some pictures with the reindeers.  You will also be practicing your skills in lasso throwing and hear stories about sami culture from the local guide.  Traditional Sami lunch at a local restaurant.  Drive back to Ivalo to river Ivalojoki to have a nice summer evening at a Finnish summer cabin in the forest.  Get familiar with the Finnish way of cottage life by helping the guide to prepare the cabin for the dinner and the dinner itself which will be a rustic cottage style dinner.   (B/L/D)

DAY 6 – WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 2018                                       IVALO – KIRKENES, NORWAY / EMBARKATION
This morning, you’ll travel to Norway through rural Lapland and cross the border to Kirkenes, a Norwegian port near the Russian border.  Strategically significant for its iron ore resources and its location near the Russian port of Murmansk, Kirkenes was occupied by 100,000 Nazi troops during World War II.  Board your Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyage ship.  Ship departs Kirkenes at 12:30 pm.  The Arctic adventure begins.  As the ship begins its voyage south, you can first enjoy a wonderful lunch followed by views of arctic wilderness from deck or the panorama lounge.  In the afternoon, the ship docks in Vardø, Norway’s easternmost port.  On board, there will be a presentation of “Life in the sea”. We continue along the Varanger peninsula to Båtsfjord before reaching Berlevåg in the evening.   Accommodation:  MS TROLLFJORD (5 nights onboard).   (B/L/D)

DAY 7 – THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2018                                           HAMMERFEST & TROMSO, NORWAY
In the middle of the night we dock at Mehamn, where you can join an unforgettable snowmobile trip through one of Europe’s most extreme and exciting natural areas in winter.  In Honningsvåg you can enjoy an excursion and breakfast at the North Cape while discovering hidden parts of Finnmark.  Before stopping in Hammerfest, you can enjoy an ‘energy coffee’ and a short introduction to ‘Melkøya – The northernmost natural gas terminal’ on board.  In autumn, we invite you to taste dried reindeer meat on deck.   Included shore excursion:  The Northernmost town in the World in Hammerfest, visit the Meridian Column, which commemorates the first official measurement of the exact size and shape of the Earth, and is an UNESO list of World Heritage Sites.  This place also offers spectacular views of Melkoya and the Snohvit field, where gas from the Snohvit field in the Barents Sea is processed.  We continue south to Øksfjord.  In winter our crew will teach you how to tie maritime knots on deck. After crossing open water, we will make a brief stop at the old trading post of Skjervøy before sailing through the beautiful Lyngenfjord in spring.  Surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Lyngen Alps, we may be visited by a local fisherman and enjoy a taste of local freshly caught prawns. We dock in Tromsø – “the gateway to the Arctic” – just in time to enjoy a midnight concert at the Arctic Cathedral.  Alternatively, a walk around town will give you the chance to enjoy a local brew in one of Tromsø’s many friendly pubs.   (B/L/D)

DAY 8 – FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2018                                                    LOFTEN ISLANDS, NORWAY
We arrive at Harstad this morning, where you can participate in one of the classic entries in Hurtigruten’s excursion programme: A taste of Vesterålen.  The Risøyrenna channel is just 7 metres deep, and was made especially for Hurtigruten in the 1920s, providing an “inside route” between Harstad and Sortland.  The sand banks are visible through the clear, green water.  Risøyhamn is a small village with only 200 inhabitants.  We make a short stop here to deliver passengers, groceries and mail.  From this port, you can also join in on a spectacular whale-watching experience during wintertime. Then we continue via Sortland to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded more than 120 years ago.  Continuing south it looks like we are sailing straight into the mountain wall, but the captain finds an opening and takes us through the narrow Raftsund.  As a tribute to the fishing history in this region, our chef shows how to fillet the catch of the day on deck in winter.  Now we reach the spectacular Trollfjord, only 2 km long and 100 meters wide, with majestic mountains surrounding it.  If the weather and time permits it – the captain will take a detour in here.  Join a sea eagle excursion to see the king of birds up close.   Included shore excursion:  Lofoten Islands Reach Svolvær.  Discover the incredible scenery and visit a gallery in Henningsvaer.  We will also visit a former caviar factory that has been transformed into an international venue for contemporary art.  We leave the islands during the evening and set course for the mainland.   (B/L/D)

DAY 9 – SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2018                                             CRUISING THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
Crossing the Arctic Circle at 66°33’N is an important ‘rite of passage’ today.  We celebrate this with a taste of our Arctic traditions out on deck. Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range.  All seven mountains are between 900 and 1,100 meters high, and it is easy to understand why these ‘ladies’ have inspired ancient myths.  We take a short stop in Nesna, an idyllic old trading post before moving on to Sandnessjøen.  The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Vega Islands is close to our call in Sandnessjøen and can be visited on an optional excursion during summer.  In Brønnøysund we offer an excursion to the Norwegian Aquaculture Centre.   (B/L/D)

DAY 10 – SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 2018                                               TRONDHEIM / KRISTIANSUND, NORWAY
Today gives you another opportunity to explore the city of Trondheim.   Included shore excursion:  Trondheim City Walk
A walk-through Trondheim is a journey through the city’s thousand-year-old history.  We show you the famous landmarks and tell the stories behind them on this guided tour through one of Norway’s most charming cities.  Back on board, the ship heads out of the majestic Trondheimsfjord, 170km long and up to 25km wide.  Li
