It is well known for large, year-round waves and is popular among surfers in Costa Rica. The town began as a small fishing village but has since grown into a tourist attraction. This afternoon, we visit the Nauyaca Waterfalls which is the ideal place for lovers of nature and adventure where you can enjoy a walk, swim, climb, take pictures and, enjoy a wonderful day in one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica.  Accommodation:  CRISTAL BALLENA – or similar 2 nights.    (B/D)

After breakfast, we depart towards Boruca Indigena Reserve. The picturesque valley of the Río Grande de Térraba cradles several indigenous villages that comprise the reserve of the Boruca (Brunka) people. At first glance it is difficult to differentiate these towns from typical Tico villages, aside from a few artisans selling their handiwork. These towns hardly cater to the tourist trade, which is one of the main reasons why traditional Boruca life has been able to continue without much distraction.  (B/D)

DAY 11 – Tuesday / February 19                                               TRANSFER FROM DOMINICAL TO SAN JOSÈ
After breakfast, at the lodge, we depart back to San Jose.  Today we will visit Cartago town.  Founded in 1563 by Juan Vasquez de Coronado, it was the Capital of Costa Rica until 1823.  The years following the regions secession from the Spanish Empire in 1821, were turbulent times for all of Central America and it was no different in Costa Rica.  Following a couple of years of struggle in which all four of Costa Rica`s major settlements, Cartago, San Jose, Heredia and Alajuela claimed the right to be the capital of the new country, Cartago lost a brief but bloody civil war with San Jose.  While it relinquished its political leadership, it remained the religious and spiritual center of the country.  We will visit one of Cartago`s most important landmark, La Basilica de la Virgen de Los Angeles, which holds the statue of the nation’s patron saint “La Negrita” and is the site of an annual pilgrimage by hundreds of thousands of Costa Ricans and Central American Catholics.  Accommodation: WYNDHAM SAN JOSE HOTEL or similar – 2 nights.   (B/D)

DAY 12 – Wednesday / February 20                                        CARTAGO & IRAZÙ VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK
Breakfast at the hotel.   Today we depart south along the Pan-American Highway until we reach the base of the behemoth “Iztaru”.  The winding road traverses fertile lands in which all types of vegetation are cultivated, all the while affording us a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys.  On a clear day, at the very top of the summit, one can be privy to an unforgettable bird’s eye view of both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  As we descend to the city of Cartago, we will stop at the Virgin of the Angels Basilica – a famous site for many believers, some of which travel for days or even weeks on foot, in a pilgrimage of faith to this site. Next, we stop at the Lankester Gardens, a University of Costa Rica Center where more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads and countless species of other plants can be seen.  We then continue to the Valley of Orosi, an area that overflows with unparalleled beauty, where we visit one of the few remaining colonial churches.  Lunch at a local restaurant.  (B/L)
