Welcome to Melbourne!  Melbourne, capital of Victoria, is perhaps best known for its fine parks and gardens, gracious tree-lined streets, historic bluestone buildings and international restaurants.  The city has a population of over 3 million making it Australia’s second largest city.  Melbourne is also home to some of Australia’s most famous sporting events including the Melbourne Cup an annual horserace, the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Australian Open Tennis. Upon arrival enjoy a panoramic city tour followed by lunch and check-in to your hotel, the evening is at your leisure.  Accommodation: CROWN METROPOL MELBOURNE HOTEL or similar (2 nights).   (L)

Day 5 – Tuesday / January 22, 2019                                                         Melbourne – Cairns, Australia
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.  Cairns is the capital of Tropical North Queensland – where the rainforest meets the reef.  Cairns is the gateway to the tropical wilderness rainforest and spectacular Great Barrier Reef. Set between the stunning twin backdrops of the mountain ranges and a sparkling Coral Sea, Cairns has the sophistication of resorts, restaurants, entertainment, and boutique shopping all within a lush tropical setting.  Upon arrival transfer to your hotel.  Dinner is at your hotel.  Accommodation: PULLMAN REEF HOTEL CASINO CAIRNS or similar (3 nights).    (B/D)

Day 6 – Wednesday / January 23, 2019                                                  Cairns, Australia
Full day excursion to the Great Barrier Reef with transfer to Reef Marina Port Douglas and board Quicksilver’s 45.5-metre high speed wavepiercing catamaran to commence the cruise to a spacious reef activity platform moored in protective lagoons at the renowned Agincourt Reef, on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef.  Quicksilver has facilities to enable both swimmers and non-swimmers to experience this stunning reef world. Explore the reef from the comfort of a semi-submersible, the underwater observatory or by snorkelling.  Lunch is included on board.   (B/L)

Day 7 – Thursday / January 24, 2019                                                       Cairns, Australia
Private coach transfer to Freshwater Railway Station.  Board the Kuranda Scenic Railway for your journey to Kuranda Village. This is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of dense rainforest, steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls.  Visit the Koala Park where you can get your photo taken with a Koala.  Depart Kuranda on the Skyrail.  The world’s only rainforest cableway is a unique experience as you silently glide over the top of the rainforest canopy and enjoy spectacular views over Cairns and across the Coral Sea to Green Island. There are 2 stops along the way where you can experience the forest floor via boardwalks.  Alight at Smithfield and make your way to Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park where your lunch will be enjoyed.  Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park is a theatrical interpretation of Aboriginal culture, showcasing the culture of the rainforest people of Tropical North Queensland.  The park is situated on 25 acres of land owned by the Tjapukai people.  The arenas allow visitors to experience every facet of the rainforest people’s culture – from the History Theatre to the inspiring Creation Theatre, and the original Dance Theatre.  In the interactive Camp Village you can have a didgeridoo demonstration, learn about bush foods and medicine and see a spear and boomerang throwing demonstration.  (B/L)

Day 8 – Friday / January 25, 2019                                                             Cairns – Alice Springs, Australia
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.  Alice Springs is a perfect base for a stay in the Red Centre, giving you easy access to all the surrounding natural wonders.  Situated on the frequently dry Todd River, the town has a population of 27,000 offering city facilities, while retaining its pioneering heritage and Outback friendliness. It is the nucleus for Central Australia’s pastoral, transport and tourist industries. Alice Springs came into existence as a result of the building of the Overland Telegraph in 1871. Today this Telegraph Station is a major attraction for visitors.  This afternoon join your local guide for a town tour of Alice Springs.  Enjoy views of Alice Springs from Anzac Hill, and see the water hole – site of the original Alice Springs.  Visit the School of the Air; followed by a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor Service where you will learn how this facility takes care of people in the outback.  Accommodation: CROWNE PLAZA ALICE SPRINGS LASSETERS or similar (1 night).   (B/D)

Day 9 – Saturday / January 26, 2019                                                        Alice Springs – Ayers Rock, Australia
Travel across the sandy desert plains towards the 36 majestic domes of Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) stopping along the way at a lookout to admire the panoramic view of the southern side of Kata Tjuta.  Continue on to arrive at the base of Walpa Gorge.  Take the walking trail through Walpa Gorge and follow the natural creek between two of the largest domes at Kata Tjuta and explore the gorge and the unusual conglomerate rock formations.  Uluru (Ayers Rock), is a huge monolith which captured the imagination of the Australian Aboriginals centuries before European settlement.  It is steeped in the mystery of legend, mythology and folklore.  Coupled with the mysterious rock formations at Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) a visit to Central Australia is a truly unique experience.  This afternoon, join your guide for an afternoon tour of Kata Tjuta including the Uluru Sunset.  In the late afternoon travel to the Uluru (Ayers Rock) sunset viewing area.  Witness the striking colour changes of Uluru at sunset whilst enjoying nibbles and a glass of wine.  After sunset travel to an exclusive venue set amongst red sand dunes and desert oak trees providing a peaceful desert setting.  Enjoy a traditional Australian barbecue dinner consisting of meats and salads.  After dinner enjoy tea and coffee as your guide conducts a tour of the night sky describing some of the visible constellations (weather permitting).   Accommodation: VOYAGES DESERT GARDENS HOTEL or similar (1 night).   (B/L/D)

Day 10 – Sunday / January 27, 2019                                                         Ayers Rock – Sydney, Australia
Early this morning enjoy sunrise viewing at Uluru.  Free time before our lunch and transfer to the airport.  Sydney, capital of New South Wales was founded in 1788 and is Australia’s oldest city.  Sydney sits astride Port Jackson, one of the most beautiful deep water harbours in the world.  With a population of just over 4 million, Sydney is also Australia’s largest city. The city boasts famous landmarks such as the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, as well as a fine array of restaurants, theatres, shopping complexes and some of Australia’s best surfing beaches.  Arrive in Sydney and transfer to your hotel.  Accommodation: AMORA HOTEL JAMISON or similar (3 nights).   (B/L)

Day 11 – Monday / January 28, 2019                                                       Sydney, Australia
Depart on a full day excursion to the Blue Mountains.  A visit will be made to the Featherdale Wildlife Park, where you will be able to feed kangaroos, emus and view many other species of Australian animal and birdlife, as well as cuddling a koala.  Arrive at Katoomba, the major centre of the mountains.  Visit Echo Point, where you will have a spectacular view of the Three Sisters – a giant rock formation. View the Jamieson Valley, with its sheer sandstone cliffs of pink and rust colours.  Lunch is included at the Hydro Majestic Hotel.  (B/L)

Day 12 – Tuesday / January 29, 2019                                                       Sydney, Australia
Transfer to the pier, where we will take a cruise around Sydney’s harbour with refreshments.  Enjoy an entertaining, personalized commentary of the people, places and events that have made Sydney harbour the most beautiful and exciting harbour in the world.  After your cruise, depart on a guided tour of the Sydney Opera House.  Fifty years ago a young Danish architect, dreaming of Bennelong Point, designed a masterpiece which pushed the boundaries of creativity and science – and put Sydney on the map forever.  See inside the world’s most recognizable sails.  Experience this miracle of architecture and engineering.  A work of art that came into existence against impossible odds and became one of the busiest performing arts centres in the world.  * Note: There are approximately 200 steps on the Sydney Opera House guided tour.  Tonight, we gather for our dinner.  (B/D)

Day 17 – Sunday / February 3, 2019                                                         Dunedin (Port Chalmers), New Zealand
This dramatic South Island coastal town offers a mix of unique natural beauty and fascinating history. Rare, yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the Royal Albatross all call Dunedin home. Equally impressive is the Victorian and Edwardian architecture that dates from its days as a gold rush town. New Zealand’s only castle sits high above the city and offers sweeping views from its famous gardens.  (B/L/D)

Day 18 – Monday / February 4, 2019                                                       Akaroa, New Zealand
Tiny penguins rule the roost in this historic settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. With a balmy, year-round climate, these famous foot-tall residents are certainly not snowbirds. The spectacular surroundings offer a wealth of outdoor activities, both in the sheltered harbour and on dry land with exquisite local boutiques and galleries.  (B/L/D)

Day 19 – Tuesday / February 5, 2019                                                       Picton, New Zealand
Built around a sheltered harbour, Picton is lined with cafés.  Popular attractions include a maritime museum and an aquarium. This town is also not short on recreational activities.  Check out one of the many wine tours.  Then relax as you browse the local shops that offer paintings from local artists and woodcarvings.  (B/L/D)

Day 20 – Wednesday / February 6, 2019                                                Wellington, New Zealand
Travel to a Victorian past as you stroll by the city’s Victorian Gothic buildings. Take the cable car up the mountain for a fantastic view.  Great views abound in Wellington.  Journey around the spectacular harbour and enjoy its amazing views. See some of the sites where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed.   (B/L/D)

Day 21 – Thursday / February 7, 2019                                                     Napier, New Zealand
Napier calls itself the Art Deco capital of the world, but it’s also a leading wine-travel destination. Levelled by an earthquake in 1931, Napier was rebuilt in Art Deco style. Along with Miami Beach, Napier is one of the best examples of this style, with many of its structures well preserved. Take a walk down Marine Parade, a tree-lined ocean boulevard with fountains and gardens, or tour superb area vineyards.  (B/L/D)

Day 22 – Friday / February 8, 2019                                                           Tauranga (Rotorua), New Zealand
Go walk-about and explore Tauranga, set on the beautiful Bay of Plenty.  Head to the beach or discover Tauranga’s lovely parks and rich history. Visit a village buried by a volcanic eruption and captured in a moment of time – a fascinating yet moving experience. Take a selfie at Hell’s Gate, an aptly named geothermal park with boiling pools, fantastic geysers, and mud baths, the largest of which is Poutamu, “the stairway to heaven.”  (B/L/D)

Surrounded by tranquil golden beaches, lush forests and dramatic coastal trails, Auckland is a nature lover’s paradise. The 48 volcanic cones that dot the surrounding area provide stunning panoramic views of the city and harbour. New Zealand’s largest city is also a shopper’s paradise offering everything from top designers to local open-air markets.
